Mixed NEC Practice Tests — Simulating Real Exam Conditions

These NEC practice tests are different from the article-by-article tests in the NEC Code category. Each test here pulls mixed questions from across the entire National Electrical Code — just like your actual licensing exam does. No single topic dominates. You need to be ready for anything.

This mixed format is the best way to prepare in the final weeks before your exam. If you have been drilling individual articles, these tests show you how you perform when the questions jump unpredictably between topics.

All tests are based on NEC 2026 but many states are still testing NEC 2023 — the core rules are the same, and our tests are tagged by edition where questions specifically reference changed articles.

Exam Strategy: On a mixed NEC exam, do not spend more than 90 seconds on any single question. If you do not know the answer, mark it and move on. Come back to it with the NEC index after you have answered the questions you know. This approach consistently improves scores because it prevents one hard question from eating up time you need elsewhere.

How to Get the Most From These Mixed Tests

Mixed NEC tests expose your weak spots faster than topic-specific tests. Here is how to use your results:

  1. After completing a test, sort your wrong answers by NEC article.
  2. Any article where you missed 2 or more questions needs more study.
  3. Go back to the article-by-article tests in the NEC Code category for that article.
  4. Read the NEC directly — open the book to that article and read the sections you missed.
  5. Return to mixed tests to verify improvement.

NEC Practice Tests — FAQ

Are these tests timed like the real exam?

You can take them untimed for study, or set your own time goal. A good benchmark: the real exam gives you about 2 minutes per question on average. If a 25-question test takes you over 50 minutes, you need to practice using your NEC index faster.

What should I score on practice tests before taking the real exam?

Consistently scoring 80% or above on mixed practice tests is a good sign you are ready. Do not stop at 70% — the real exam has questions you have not seen before, so aim to be comfortably above the passing line in practice.
