What Is EPA 608 Type III Certification?

Type III is the EPA Section 608 certification for servicing, maintaining, and disposing of low-pressure appliances. In practice that means centrifugal chillers in hospitals, universities, office towers, and other large buildings, charged with refrigerants such as R-123, R-11, R-113, R-245fa, and R-1233zd(E). You must pass the Core section as well as Type III to be certified for this equipment. These practice tests cover the Type 3 section only; use the Core practice tests for the rest.

The Type III section has 25 multiple-choice questions and is taken closed-book with a proctor. Most test providers require 70% (18 of 25) to pass.

What the Type III Exam Focuses On

Systems that run in a vacuum

The evaporator of a low-pressure chiller runs below atmospheric pressure. A leak therefore pulls air and moisture into the system instead of pushing refrigerant out, and many exam questions are built on that idea.

Purge units

Non-condensables that leak in collect at the top of the condenser, and the purge unit removes them. If the purge unit runs often, that is a sign of a leak. High-efficiency purge units keep refrigerant loss during purging very low.

Leak testing without high pressure

You cannot pressurize a chiller the way you would a Type II system. Raise the pressure with controlled hot water or heating blankets, and never go above 10 psig. The evaporator rupture disc is set at 15 psig.

Recovery and charging

Before opening a low-pressure appliance, evacuate it to 25 mm Hg absolute (about 29 inches Hg vacuum). Remove the liquid refrigerant first, then the vapor. Keep water circulating through the tubes during recovery so they do not freeze. When charging a system that is in deep vacuum, add vapor before liquid until the saturation temperature is above 32°F. Otherwise the water in the tubes can freeze and rupture them.

How to Use These Type 3 Practice Tests

Each test has 25 questions, the same as the real section, and every answer has an explanation. Do the tests in order and review each missed question before moving on. Aim for 85% or higher on your practice tests before booking the real exam. The Type II material overlaps with this section, so see the Type II & III practice tests if you are going for Universal certification.
