Free online branch circuit practice test based on the NEC. 25 basic electrical questions on branch circuit ratings, GFCI and AFCI protection, receptacle spacing, and overcurrent protection rules. Good for electrician exam prep.
A branch circuit is the wiring between the last overcurrent device and the connected outlets or equipment. The NEC groups branch circuits by their rating — commonly 15, 20, 30, 40, and 50 amperes — and sets rules for what can be connected to each size, how far apart receptacles must be placed, and where extra protection like GFCI or AFCI is required. Two safety devices to keep straight: GFCI protects people from shock in wet or grounded locations (bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoors), while AFCI protects against fires caused by dangerous arcing faults in many dwelling unit circuits.
