Service conductors carry power from the utility connection point into the building's main disconnecting means, so the NEC gives them special rules beyond ordinary feeders and branch circuits. Key basics: a building is normally supplied by only ONE service (with limited exceptions), the service disconnect must be at a readily accessible point near where the conductors enter the building, and no more than six disconnects may be grouped together to open the whole service. Overhead service conductors also need minimum ground clearances and a proper drip loop at the service head to keep water out.
