The Core exam has 50 questions and each installation or service specialty exam has 100 questions. You need 70% on each to pass — 35 of 50 on Core and 70 of 100 on a specialty. Check natex.org for the current format before you book.

NATE certification lasts two years. To renew, you submit 16 hours of continuing education or retake the specialty exam before your certification expires.

No. These are independent practice tests written to match the published NATE exam topics. They are not official NATE exam questions.

Exam Tip: Scenario questions combine several ideas at once. Break each one down step by step: what is happening, and which single concept explains it best?

  • To label the equipment's serial number
  • To keep the equipment de-energized and safe while work is being done
  • To increase the voltage for testing
  • To speed up the repair process

Question 2: Which tool would a technician use to read refrigerant pressure?

  • Tubing cutter
  • Torque wrench
  • Manifold gauge set
  • Nut driver

Question 3: Insulation with an R-value of 21 is compared to insulation with an R-value of 13. Which one insulates better?

  • The R-13 insulation, since lower numbers are always better
  • They insulate exactly the same
  • It depends only on the insulation's color
  • The R-21 insulation, since a higher R-value means better resistance to heat flow

Question 4: A technician burns their hand touching a hot compressor shell. Which type of heat transfer caused this?

  • Conduction
  • Radiation
  • Convection
  • Latent heat only

Question 5: Why does refrigerant boil at a low temperature inside the evaporator coil?

  • The refrigerant is kept at a high pressure, which lowers its boiling point
  • The refrigerant is kept at a low pressure, which lowers its boiling point
  • Pressure has no effect on the refrigerant's boiling point
  • The evaporator coil freezes the refrigerant solid

Question 6: Besides temperature, which factor also plays a role in occupant comfort?

  • The color of the ductwork
  • The brand of the outdoor unit
  • Humidity
  • The technician's uniform color

Question 7: What does it mean if the wet bulb and dry bulb temperature readings are close together?

  • The thermometers are broken
  • The air contains no moisture
  • The air pressure is extremely low
  • The relative humidity is fairly high

Question 8: Which formula is used to find voltage in a circuit if current and resistance are known?

  • V = I × R
  • V = R ÷ I
  • V = I ÷ R
  • V = I + R

Question 9: A string of holiday lights goes completely dark when a single bulb burns out. What kind of circuit is this?

  • Parallel circuit
  • Series circuit
  • Neither type of circuit
  • A grounded circuit only

Question 10: A technician is about to replace a run capacitor. What two safety steps should happen before touching it?

  • Measure the room's relative humidity and check the R-value
  • Turn up the thermostat and check the air filter
  • De-energize the circuit and safely discharge the capacitor
  • Tighten all nearby bolts with a torque wrench

Question 11: A cooling system is rated at 2 tons. How many BTU/hr is that?

  • 12,000 BTU/hr
  • 6,000 BTU/hr
  • 20,000 BTU/hr
  • 24,000 BTU/hr

Question 12: A room feels stuffy even though the thermostat reads the correct temperature. What comfort factor is most likely the issue?

  • Air movement (circulation)
  • Electrical voltage
  • Refrigerant pressure
  • R-value of insulation

Question 13: In a condenser coil, heat conducts from the hot refrigerant into the metal fins, then convects away into the air pushed by the fan. Why does understanding both of these heat transfer types matter to a technician?

  • Because only one of them is real; the other does not actually happen
  • Because both processes work together, and a problem with either one (dirty fins or a weak fan) can reduce how well the system rejects heat
  • Because conduction and convection cannot both happen in the same coil
  • Because only radiation actually matters in a condenser coil

Question 14: A technician needs to access a rooftop unit using a ladder. What is a key safety rule to follow?

  • Use a ladder without inspecting it first
  • Carry as many tools as possible in both hands while climbing
  • Maintain three points of contact while climbing
  • Set the ladder base as far from the wall as possible

Question 15: A technician wants to check if a fuse is blown by testing for a voltage drop across it with a multimeter set to AC voltage. What must be true about the circuit for this specific test to make sense?

  • The circuit must be completely de-energized first
  • The fuse must already be removed from the circuit
  • The technician must remove all PPE first
  • The circuit must be energized so current is actually trying to flow through the fuse

Question 16: A rattling duct creates unwanted noise every time the system runs. Which comfort factor does this affect?

  • Noise level
  • Air cleanliness
  • Humidity
  • R-value

Question 17: A technician needs to create a flare fitting connection on a copper line. Which tool is needed?

  • Nut driver
  • Flaring tool
  • Manifold gauge set
  • Multimeter

Question 18: An air conditioner lowers the room temperature and also removes moisture from the air at the same time. Which two types of heat is the system managing?

  • Only latent heat; sensible heat is not involved in air conditioning
  • Only sensible heat; latent heat is not involved in air conditioning
  • Sensible heat (temperature) and latent heat (moisture/state change)
  • Radiant heat and conductive heat only

Question 19: A technician is about to cut sheet metal with a power tool. What PPE is most important to wear?

  • Hearing protection only
  • A necktie
  • Sandals
  • Safety glasses

Question 20: A technician notices a torn vapor barrier in an attic while running a new line. What risk does this create for the building, regardless of the technician's own work?

  • Moisture can pass through the gap and potentially cause mold or wood damage over time
  • The attic will become fireproof
  • The insulation R-value will automatically increase
  • The vapor barrier issue has zero effect on the building

Question 21: A home has multiple outlets on one circuit, wired in parallel. One outlet stops working, but the others on the same circuit still work fine. What does this suggest about the wiring?

  • The entire circuit must be wired in series
  • The problem is likely isolated to that one outlet's own branch, consistent with parallel wiring
  • The circuit breaker must be broken
  • Parallel wiring cannot explain this situation

Question 22: Which tool gives both a dry bulb and a wet bulb reading in one device?

  • Manifold gauge set
  • Torque wrench
  • Sling psychrometer
  • Tubing cutter

Question 23: A 24-volt control transformer is powering a circuit with 8 ohms of resistance. What is the current draw of this circuit?

  • 0.33 amps
  • 192 amps
  • 8 amps
  • 3 amps

Question 24: Before cutting into an interior wall to run a line, why should a technician check whether the wall is load-bearing?

  • Cutting a load-bearing wall without proper support could weaken the structure
  • Load-bearing walls are always painted a different color
  • Load-bearing walls never contain wiring or plumbing
  • It has no effect on safety either way

Question 25: Why should a technician never intentionally vent refrigerant into the atmosphere?

  • It has no real consequence at all
  • It is unsafe and against environmental rules that HVACR technicians must follow
  • It always improves system performance
  • It is required before every service call

Question 26: A technician converts a temperature reading of 86 degrees F to Celsius using C = (F − 32) × 5/9. What is the result?

  • 18°C
  • 54°C
  • 30°C
  • 48°C

  • Noise level
  • Air cleanliness
  • R-value
  • Humidity

Question 28: A circuit breaker trips and shuts off power after an overload. What should a technician do before simply resetting it?

  • Investigate the cause of the overload before resetting the breaker
  • Ignore the cause and reset it immediately
  • Replace the breaker with a much higher-rated one
  • Bypass the breaker completely

Question 29: Why is it important to use a torque wrench and the correct specification when tightening a refrigerant fitting, rather than just tightening it by feel?

  • Torque wrenches only work on electrical connections, not refrigerant fittings
  • Incorrect torque can either leave the fitting too loose (causing a leak) or too tight (damaging the threads)
  • Manufacturer torque specifications are only suggestions with no real effect
  • Tightening by feel is always more accurate than using a torque wrench

Question 30: Which statement best reflects why the NATE Core exam covers such a wide range of topics, from safety to basic electrical?

  • Only electrical knowledge actually matters on the job
  • The topics are unrelated and included at random
  • A well-rounded HVACR technician needs a foundation in all of these areas to work safely and effectively
  • Only safety knowledge actually matters on the job
