Grounding connects an electrical system to the earth. Bonding connects metal parts together so they're all at the same electrical potential — no dangerous voltage difference between them. A common source of confusion: the grounded conductor is the neutral (normally carries current); the grounding conductor is the equipment ground (normally carries NO current, only fault current). These two are bonded together at exactly ONE point — the main bonding jumper at the service. A ground rod alone is NOT enough to clear a fault safely; the real safety mechanism is the low-impedance equipment grounding conductor path back to the source.
