Electrical drawings use a standardized set of symbols so any trained electrician can read them the same way. A single-line diagram simplifies a three-phase system down to one line; a schematic (wiring) diagram shows every individual conductor. On a floor plan, know your basics: a circle is usually a light, "S" is a switch, a circle with two lines is a receptacle. A home run arrow with a circuit number shows where wiring heads back to the panel, and a switch leg (often a curved or dashed line) shows which switch controls which fixture — it's a control relationship, not the literal wire path.
