A synchronous generator (alternator) always runs at a fixed speed set by the supply frequency and the number of poles: Ns = 120f/P. Two separate controls run the machine: the governor on the prime mover controls real power (and frequency, when running alone), while the excitation (field current) controls reactive power and terminal voltage. Before connecting a generator to a live grid, it must be properly synchronized — matched in voltage, frequency, and phase sequence — otherwise a very large current can flow.
